Volunteering for the EDO offers people an opportunity to gain experience in public interest environment law, and to help the EDO. Volunteers make an invaluable contribution to our work and how much we can do for the community.

Our in-house volunteer programs are for law students. Other volunteers who assist in many areas of EDO work include professionals such as solicitors, barristers and experts.

Professional volunteers

The EDO relies on lawyers and other professionals working in related fields to assist in the areas of casework and advice, policy and law reform, and educational publishing. If you are interested in finding out more about the work of the EDO and how you could contribute in a professional capacity, please contact us.

Student volunteers

Law student volunteers answer the phones, undertake legal research, assist on casework and projects and carry out administrative tasks.

We run two volunteer programs for law students:

1) Day Volunteer Program (March-November)

2) Internship Program (November-February; June-July)

The EDO may accept a work experience secondary student.

Day Volunteer Placement Program

The Day Volunteer Placement Program begins in March.

Volunteers work one full day per week for a minimum of one semester.

Rosters are organised each semester, finalising at the end of February and late July.
If a casual vacancy arises during semester, applications on file will be reviewed.

Day (Semester) Volunteer Application

Applications for semester 1, 2012, close Thursday 1 March 2012.

Volunteer Internships

Volunteers work full-time for 2 consecutive weeks over the summer (between November and February) or over the winter break between semesters (June/July).
Intern work might include assisting staff with casework, law reform and policy projects, and researching and updating our public resource Environmental Law Online and other publications.

Who should apply?

Law students with an interest in environmental issues and environmental law. Later-year law students and those pursuing additional study in a related field such as science or environmental policy are encouraged to apply.

When to apply

Applications are accepted at any time for consideration in the next program. Applications usually close in May and September; exact due dates will be advertised on this website, through the EDO e-Bulletin and via universities where possible.
